Student City Council District in Berkeley

Students make up nearly 1/4 of the Berkeley population, but do not have even one representative on the 8 member Berkeley City Council. To resolve this problem of representation, we are working with the Associated Students of the University of California (ASUC) to create a district map proposal that will give students a seat on the Berkeley City Council and a voice in local government. We believe that students constitute an important community of interest in Berkeley that is underrepresented by the current system and deserves to have a voice in the city's government.

Online Voter Registration in California

Current law in California requires a cumbersome process of acquiring a voter registration form from a government agency building or a registration drive and mailing it in to the local voter registrar's office for registration. Forms may get lost or information may be entered incorrectly by registrar officials when they read your form. Barriers for access to our democracy are higher for potential new voters.

There is a better way. SB 397 in the California legislature would allow you to register or re-register online. Online registration will be more convenient, reduce paperwork costs, and increase increase access to the democratic process, particularly for underrepresented groups such as ethnic minorities and students, who are less likely to be registered. All of these goals have been accomplished in Arizona, Colorado, and Washington, where online voter registration exists.
